Agro Micro Finance

Chairman - Agro Micro Finance Sri Lanka is an island nation situated in the Indian Ocean just below India. It is a small Island with about 25,000 square miles in size with a population of about 20 million. In the early days main economy was dependant on Agriculture mainly the plantation sector with more than 65% of the population involved directly or indirectly. But with time the Pattern has changed towards the service sector.

Unemployment is yet a problem, females being higher amoung the unemployed, with this category in mind it was envisaged that self employment projects be started, to help them. Given the wider coverage of Micro Finance even the poor are in a position to derive benefits if an effective social mobilization and empowerment process preceeds the delivery of Micro Finance. Provision of handouts to the poor creates a dependency synodrome. Poverty in an ailment that could be cured by attitudinal changes. Responsibility and participation as a dutiful citizen should be inculcated in their mind.

Under this scenario Agro Micro Finance together with its sister organization Agromart Outreach Foundation has been promoting Micro Finance in Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Monaragala and Ampara districts of Sri Lanka, since 1994, By the year 2000 Agro Micro Finance has been in corporated under the companies act as a separate company limited by guarantee.

Our products are group Loans and individual Loans for approved income generating project covering a wide range on Agriculture Livestock, Food processing, Garments, Trade Fisheries and Industry.

To facilitate our work we have installed a very sophisticated MIS software system by the name of MBWin, so that monitoring and evaluation has become very easy. This progrmme is running smoothly in all the districts together with the Head office in Colombo.
