Mr. H. M. Herath - Farmer ( Kurunegala District )“ I started with very little, but I always try to build on what I know ...”
Coming from the Kudagalgamuwa village of the Kurunegala district, he is proud of his achievements. On 1.5 acres of agricultural land around his house he grows decorative plants, flowers, vegetables and fruit trees commercially. His two buffaloes plough his paddy field during the rice growing season. As Chairman of the Agromart production Society in his village, Mr. Herath is an example to other aspiring members who wish to receive training and agricultural loans. In 2003, he applied for a small loan of Rs.10,000 to start a sideline in cane cultivation. One harvest of long grain and samba rice generates a yield of over Rs.25,000 but cultivating is possible only during the wet season. Therefore Mr. Herath used part of his loan to purchase 300 cane plants for cultivation and later commercial use. Now he has already noticed a Rs. 5,000 increase in earnings after the loan. He saves the extra money for his eldest son’s education in banking. Mr. Herath’s achievements in managing his loan and bettering his business have been positively recognized by Agro Micro finance. In 2004 he was awarded with the price of “Best Entrepreneur of the year”. Mr. Herath is a client of Agro Micro Finance.
