Mr. Jayathilake - Reservoir Fisherman (Hambantota)“ A good education is the ticket to a better life”
He voices their concerns to the government. Mr. Jayathilake heard about the training and loan scheme offered by Agromart and their MFI partner AMF in early 2006. “I had always rented my canoes before. I wanted to have two of my own – one for myself and the other for my eldest son who goes fishing with me.” He remarks, ‘So I took out loan of Rs. 50,000 and bought a pair of second-hand fiberglass canoes and some new nets.” Mr. Jayathilaka has since seen his profits increase twofold and has managed to put away savings for his three children’s schooling. “A good education is the ticket to a better life.” He says. As well as building a new extension to his simple home with his higher profits, Mr. Jayathilake will soon apply for a second loan to buy a motorcycle and another canoe to rent to other fishermen. Mr. Jayathilake is a client of Agro Micro Finance.

Lunugamwehara Resevoir has been the place of work for Mr.jayathilake for the last 23 years. Four nights awake he takes his canoe out into the reservoir and catches large and small fresh water fish using nets. On a good night he catches around 20 kilograms- about Rs. 1,600 worth. As chairman of the Fisheries society in his area , he represents the 200 fishermen who earn their living from the reservoir.
